South African Native Killed When Police Inlervene

llrceeived Fridav, 8.50 p.m. » JOIIANNEKBURG, Sept. 2. Race rioting ilared up in Johannesburg and tlie summnding towns last night and the police had to take aetiou against Africans and Europeans. In Johannesburg oue African ivas shot dead, four policemen wero injured and tramears and ollier vehicles wero stoned. Tlie trouble liere start ed when au African threw a stone at a policeman. Thereupon hundreds of natives began stoning tlie .police, using stones froxn lieaps apparentlv galliered for the purpose. The District Commandant of Police (Alajor P. Grobler) led the niounted police in a charge against the crowd. The police iired sliots when the natives stood their ground hurling heavy stones at them. Oue native was killed by a bullet in the liead. Police baton charges iinaliy broke up the storm eeilti'e of the rioting, but marauding baiuls of rioters tiien stoned public vehicles. J . As well'as the clasli with natives the police had to disperse hundreds ot Europeans who attacked Africans in a nearby area. The police had to use batons to rescue two Africans from liostile Europeans. The cause of the rioting was the City Council's decision tq raise natives' train i'ares from -91 to 3d. Hundreds of natives in the towns surrounding Johannesburg also stoned publnvehicles. I.ate last night all was quiet, but police otlicials said more truuide could be expected today. This is ttie secoiul large-scale racia! disturi'ance in the Enion in 1949. Between January 1 and ti 112 were killed and 10B7 injured wiieu Indians and Africans clashed in Durban.
