Vocalist's Fine Performance. With a magnificent performance of the aria "Caro Nome," from Verdi's "Rigoletto," Mrs. Daphne Ellwood, the Levin soprano, further distinguished herself at last night's session of the Wellington Competitions Society's festival by winnirig the society's vocal scholarship for women. Miss Violet Jones, of Lower Hutt, was second with the contralto aria "My Heart Is Weary-." Houses For Ex-Servicemen. During July a further 167 State housing tenancies were • allocated' under the system Nwhereby at least half of all newly yacant or newly built State reptal houses and flats go to ex-service*men. This brought the total number so allocated until the end of that month- to 10,847. Rehabilitation housing committees in each centre make the allocations on a basis of relative urgency. Enjoyable Social. A record crowd attended the Athletic Footbali Club's "after the: game" social on Thursday night and the function was a big success. Competent and cheerful, Mr. Doug. Collier as M.C. kept the programme moving at a brisk pace and an excellent evening resulted. To music suplied by Mrs. H. Campbell at the piano dancing was continuel until midnight. Following an excellent supper supplied by the committee, Miss D. Wood played extras.
