Personal. Mrs. W. H. Ralph, of MilLRoad, is visiting Auckland. y,,y ' Mr. Ian Smith, son of Mrv and Mrs. E. Smith, of Tasman Road, after spending his furiough with his parents, has retumed to "the Navy Training Base at Tamaki. Mr. Les. Rickard, of Waikanae, who received serious injuries when involved in a - bulldozer accident Some three months ago, is 1 now making some headway towards recovery, although it is unlikely that he will be able to leave his bed for some time yet without the help of crutches. Elusive Whitebait. After a barren period extending over the last three or four weeks, small catches of whitebait are again reported. Hockey Tourists Return. •The ladies5 representative hockey team which is visiting Masterton, was eliminated from the tourna1 ment when defeated by Southland after winning their two earlier games. The xeam is expected back on Friday night. Sqvere Frost. Following a heavy fall of snow on the ranges, residents who wakened eariy saw a particularly hard frost on Thursday morning. A few of the most optimistic gardeners who have early potara es through, were busy with hoses and buckets washing the frost off before the sun rose-
Card Evening Held. Despite a trosuy night, there was a satisfactory attendance for the opening on Tuesday of a series of six card eVenings to augment the fun'ds of the otaki Brass Band. First prizes were annexed by, Mrs. E. J. Rosoman and Mr. R. Bilis, and seconds went to Miss • G. Aomarere and Mrs. W. Anderson". Two special prizes were won by Mrs. L. Housiaux and Miss E. Brown.
Successful Dance. The dance organised by the Tuis Marching Team Committee, which was held in the Angiican Hall on Wednesday night, was well attended, and an enjoyable time was spent. Novelty dance prizes were awarded to Misses V. Boggs and S. Smith, and a competition prize to Mrs. W. Dellar. Mr. T. Gray was M.C. and the music was supplied by Mrs. G. Gray, while a delicious home made supper proved a fitting finale. Spring Show Next Week. The Otaki Horticuitural Society will hoid its spring show next Friday and the High Commissioner for Australia, Mr. A. R. Cutler, V.C., will perform the opening ceremony at 3 p.m. An outstanding attraction should fce the display of daffodils by the Hutt bulb specialist, Mr. H. Poole. With a continuation of the present fine spell, many choice blooms will be presented and record entries are anticipated. Entries will close at "The Chronicle" offlce, Otaki, on Thursday next.
