Fine For Apprentice Who Left Employment _
-"WANGANUI, August 30. A penalty of £45 10s was today im oosed in the Magistrate's Court on Robert James Dawson, aged 19 .years. formerly of Wanganui and now of Lake Pukaki, for a breach bf an apprenticeship contract with-a Wanganui firm; . -It was explained for' the Labour Department that the. defendant had approximately a year to run of a fliveyear contract, and -had left his env plovment, later writing to the empldyer saying that he was not returning. Subsequently it was ascertained he was at Lake Pukaki, and the engineer there was advised that the defendant had not completed his apprenticeship. The defendant had made remarkable pro gr'ess and had passed his examination for his B grade wireman's certificate and had then Left when he turned 19. The Magistrate (Mr. S. S. Preston) c-riticised the employment of the defendant by a State Department, coinmenting that if a private employer had engaged this youth he would have been iiable to a fme of £50% The Magistrate remarked that the youth had broken his cpntract and every morai obligation he had to the employers. Is ftxing the penalty cognisance was taken of the need for a deterrent against others doing the same thing.
