Scottish Entries Made For Empire Games
AUCKLAND, August 30. The firdt official entry forms of a> competing nation, have been filed witli the organising committee of the British Empire Games. The secretary of the Scottish National Sports Federation, Mr G. W. Ferguson O.B.E., ox . fldinburgh, has notifled the secretary of Jthe Games, Mr C. L. Cleal, that Seot-. (land will send 10 ox.ll meh and thre^ or four women as eompetitofs in varinxis events at the festival. In addition Mf W. M. Todd has been nominated as a swimming judge. ' The Scottish team will leave foi Auckland by the Mataroa about Deeember 16 and is due to arrive on or about January 21. The 1950 Games will be held from February 4 to 11. The entries of Scottish athletes have been made in the following events:— Track and field, one and three mileS 120 'and -140 yards hurdles, shot put and hammer throw (men), broad jump (women); boxixxg, flyweight, bantam, fea ther and lightweight; cycling, 1000 nxetres time trial, 10 miles track, 100 kilometres road raee, 4000 metres pxxrsuit; swimming, 100 yards, 440 yards, 1650 yards freestyle, 110 yards backstroke, springboard and towrer divixxg (men), 110 yards freestyle, 110 yards backstroke, 220* yards breaststroke, 330 yards medley • (women). "We have done very much betteT than we anticipated, " said Mr Fergus on in a covering letter. "We can al any rate send you a team which is strong in number. Unfortunately sonxe of our best people may not be able ro itravel. " No entries have been made for feneing, lawn bowls,- rowing, weighi lifting or wrestling.
