Moral Rearmament As The Highway To World Peace
Received Monday, '7 p.m. NEW YORK, August 28. ~ Senator Julin -• Foster * Dulles declared tonight that United States' reliance on material military might "skirts the road to war."( ■ Speaking from the pulpit of the Presbyterian Church at Watertown, Senatqr Pulles, a Republican foreign poliey leader, said : — "Today our nation , is relying greatly on material military might. That is dangerous- - A nation that possesses a great military establishment is^apt to be influenced by the eoun-sel of persons who believe in the Ineyitability of war or who believe that good ends can be gained by violent means."
Declaring that . peaee would'not be won until the woxid's people developed their moral power, Senator Dulles said: "In Washington- these days, Gongress is working on great plans to halt communism by giving economic military aid to those who we hope will resist. Ii is, however, perfectly clear that these plans will- not sueeeed if tney merely put material things into the hands of men who do not have spiritual fait.ii and who do not feel the sense of brotherhoOd and social responsibility. ' ' Senator Dulles warned that the only effective barrier between Germany and Russia was a moral barrierl "If that crum^es there could readily conie another Soviet-German offensive alliance such as that whieh was entered into almost exactly ten years ago today and which touched off World War II." Turning to Far East problems, h„ said it was essential that United States make clear it was determined to support freedom in Asia where the people were 1 ' toru between resistance and resignation."
