Received Mondav, 7.30 p.m. PERTH, August 20. "We are Incky to get in," said Captain .T. Thompson, master of the collier Avismont which reachod Fre inantle this morning. The Avismoat's cargo of coal for Adelaide caught fire dnring a recent storm in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The coal was still smonldering this mornnig. The trouble reached a climax 12 davs ago wlion tlie ship rau into a gale Friction caused by tlie ship's pitching intonsified the combustion in the cargo and the gas in two holds increased until it blew otf the hatch covers. One lieavy scction was blnwn 011 to tlie cha'd house and tunibled on to th t bridge. Over the past five days the crew was called on to maintain nnceasing vigil. No sooner had thev dealt with one outbreak of fire tinui thev were called to another. Captain Thompson attributcd the safe arrival to a week of cairn weather in the latter stages and the eontinnal fight waged by the crew.
