Mr. John A. Lee will stand as a Democratic Labour Party candidate for Grey Lynn at the General Election against the official Labour Party candidate, the Post-master-General (Mr. F. Hackett) . An important success was gained by Mrs. Daphne Ellwood, of Levin, when she won the^oprano test at the Wellington Competitions Society's festival recently. Mrs. Ellwobd also gained second place in the lieder class forv women and third in the continental song test, hot lieder, for women. Three- Lavin entrants secUred awards at- the Manawatu Competitions -Societyis annual festival, which opened ih Palmerston North yesterday. John Elliott won ftrst place for Greek br classical dancing (under eight years) , while Margafet Leask was second in the skipping dance class (10 years and under 12). Pamela Worsfold was awarded third prize for piano solo (12 years and under 14). The Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, announced yesterday that Wing Commander J. M. Checkett, D.S.O., D.F.C., Commanding Officer R.N.Z.A.F. station Lautha'a Bay, Fiji, will be relieved early in September by Wing Commander R. Webb, D.S.O., D.F.C., who has held the appointment ' of assistant Air member for personnel the Air Department, Wellington, since March, 1946. Wing Commander Checkfetts,^ olf" hris retUrn to New Zealand, will be attached for temporary duty at Air Department, Wellington.
