Accused Of Liquidating 100,000 Polish Jews
Received Tuesday, 7 p.m. LONDON, August 23. The 61-year-old German Field Marsh'al, Fritz .Erich von. Manstein, will, face t-rial today accused of liquidating 100,000 Jews whiie he was commander of the Eleventh German Army in the Crimea, and with 16 other war crime^ allegedly committed in Poland and Russia. The Allies have held Manstein for four years. • The first group of charges allege that Manstein in Poland between Sep tember 2, 1939, and Octover 2-5., 1939, in violation of the laws and usages of war, autliorised and perniitted tlie krlling and maltreatment of Polish mtlzens. The second group of charges allege that Manstein failed to seeure humane treatment for Soviet prisoners | of war and accuse him of issuing orders that members of the Soviet forces sliould be treated as partisans and shot without triai. The cha.rges which correspondents say the prosecutiou regkrds as most serious, are those relating to the accus- , ' ation that Manstein ordered or author- ■ ised the lianding over of Jews and Gj-psies to a -sjiecial task force fer execution by shooting, hanging, gassr ing and drowning.
