AUCKLAND, August 22. The number oi chemists and chemieal engineers was .'expected to increase in Neiv Zealand and eventually there would be 616, of whom 193 would be employed in industry, said the Minister of Scientific and Industrial Research, ' Mr. T. II. MeCombs, in Auckland toda}r. The Minister, who was opening the conference of the Royal and New Zealand Institutes of Chemistry, emphasised the important role chemists uere playing in the development of industry in the Dominion. Mr. MeCombs said that in 1927 there were in New Zealand only 92 qualified chemists of whom 26 were employed in industry. ^ There were now 450 chemists and chemieal engineers including 138 in industry. The proportion of chemists employed in private industry had fallen in that period roughly 35 .to 30 per cent. Overall there had been a five-fold increase in the number of chemists .em-
ployed in the Dominion. Mr. MeCombs said the utilisation of New Zealand's exotic forests Wafc s. problem for chemists. Tliese were rapidl v maturing and something would have to he done to ensure that the products were not wnsted. The Government 's intention to establish pulp and paper mills depended largely on chemists and chemieal engineers.
