London Typist As South African Chieftainess
Received Tuesday, 11.22 a.m. CAPETOWN, August 22. The "women of Bamangwato tribe today acclaimed the former London typiste, Ruth Williams, as a "goddess." Her husband, Seretse Khama, is chief apparent of the Bamangwatos. Wearing a floral dress, theY'white goddess" spoke briefly to the tribe in Sechijama, the tribal language. Native women screamed a welcome in highpitched voices which could be heard everywhere in the village of Palapye where the Khamas are living. Some South African newspapers, however, were not so enthusrastic about her arrival. The Nationalist "Die Burger" called her "a foolish, ignorant young woman." The newspaper added: "There exists in the union a certainty that our own coiour nrotriem will be detrimentally influenced if Seretse Khama and his white wife are permitted. to assume Bamangwato chieftainsh'P-"
