Rigid Enforcement Of Cycle Equipment Regulations
Although warnings have already been given, there are many cyc'ists who still fail to ensure that their machines conform to the regulations, particularly in respect of rear red reflectots and white painted mudguards. The district transport inspector, Mr. W. Boyes, is at present intensifying the campaign against offenders and . prosecutions will , follow if the regulations are not » ' adhered to. ! The regulations place the onus on every cycllst to see that his machine is properly equipped. Bicycles must at all times have a red reflector or .rear red light of an approved make or type, an efficient brake operating on the rear wheel, a rear white surface of at least 12 square inches on the rear mudguard, and a warning bell. If the bicycle is used during the hours of darkness a lamp showing a white light, which can be visible for 300 feet under normal conditions must be fitted and used. The inspector emphasises that the regulation in regard to the reffector and white paint strip applies to machines, at all times and they cannot be ridden otherwise. Racing cycles, when used as a means of conveyance are classified for the purpose of the regulations, a« iordinary bicyclei.
