CHRISTCHURCH, August 39. For the first time in many years potatoes are to be imported to New Zealand. Arrangements have been made for a shipment to the North Island, principallv Auckland, in the immediate future of two eoiisignments from Australia aggregating about 1009 tons. The importation is being mhde by 111 er chants affiliated to the New Zealand Grain, Seed and Produce Merchants' Federation by arrangements with the New Zealand Government, and the two shipments may be the forerunner of others this year. South Island merc.hants expect an acute shortage of potatoes before the new season's eariy varieties are on the market. ~ -• "On the present outlook there will not be enough potatoes south of Cook Strait to sup'ply the South Island 's own requirements for the rest of the year," said oue Casholl Street merchant todqy. "It is well over 10 years sinCe potatoes were imported to New Zealand. . Then two vorv large shipments were impofted, and because they bulked so large ly a considerable quantity was ruincd. This year this danger should be avoided as the potatoes are being imported in smaller srhipm^nts.
