Crossed Atlantic In 20-Foot Cutter
Received Friday, 10.30 a.m. LONDON, August 18. Thousands lined the Devon shore line today to give a tremendous welcome to the Canadian brothers, Stanley and Colin Smith, who crossed the Atlantic from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in their self-built 20-foot cutter Nova Espero. The brothers told of their six weeks, 3000-mile . trip in cramped conditions. Their cabin measured only six feet by four. At times they had to bail frantically to keep their craft afloat. Once they had to lie in their cabin for 18 hours with a canvas cover lashed across the top as heavy seas swept their deck. I In the Channel last night there was a dramatic family reunion when the mother, father and sister of the two brothers came alongside the tiny Nova Espero in a launch. The Nova Espero is believed to be the smallest boat to cross the Atlantic. _ |
