Mariakau's Double Success in A Grade
Playing in the Horowhenua Badminton Association's A grade competition, the Mknakau team has won its last two matches, , 'defeating Shannon axid Ohau. Shannon v. Manakau. The highlight of this game was the victory of Miss Joyce- Pigott over Mrs. . W. Phillips, who is Horowhenua's No. 2 ranking lady and top player for Manakau. Miss Heien Gardiner showed improved form to defeat Miss Eileen Leen after a terrific duel which went to advantage. J. Bryant, as usual, played well. D. Richards, of Shannon, impressed with his sound play and should further improve with experience. Indivi'dual results, with Manakau prayers mentioned _ first in each instance, were: — Men's singles: L. Staples beat D. Pedersen 21—6, J. Bryant beat D. Gyde 21 — 5, M. Staples beat V. Tippler 21—15, B. Mather lcst to D. Richards 15 — 21. Ladies' singles: Mrs. W. Phillips lost to Miss J. Manakau. The match between Ohau and Manakau was a very even one, the result being in doubt until the last game was played. Ohau was unfoftunate in being without their top lady, Miss M. Karauti, but Mrs. P. Candy played exceptionally well to defeat Mrs. W. Phillips 17 — 16. Miss W. Murray, a promising Ohau player, , extended. her opponent, iMiss E! Leen, to lose 13 — 15; she ;must concentrate on covering the court fuliy and will then be a great asset to the Ohau club. L. and M. Staples, 'two difficult players to beat, were in top form and a grand game was witnessed in the top men's doubles.
