-Received Thursday, 11 a.n;. i RKETORIA, August 17. In a match which was pleasantly free from the tension of most.of the other games on the tour, the All Blacks beat Com*bined Northern Universities by 17 points (three tries, ^one of them converted, ,and fwo penalty goals) to three pomts". (a penalty goal) . ' -
The game might have been a brilliant spectacie but for the extremely hot weather, which cause'd both sides to have periods of relaxation. Typical open football was played by the Universities and the All Blacks replied in kind. j The match was a triumph for' the Goddard brothers. Jack Goddard ^gave *a very sound display at full-back and scored eight points with accurate goal kicking. His brotlier Maurice marke'd his return after a long spell through a brokeii wrisfc by scoring the most spectacular ' try of the day when he inter',epted a pass near half-way and Cumpletely outpaced the opposition. The only disturbing feature from the All Blacks' viewpoint was their difficulty in understanding the referee's interpretation of the scrum rules. • It seems that a meeting will have to be held to clarify the position, as many referees are penalising the All Blacks for the same things which are aPowed to go unhalted by the opposing sides. Beaten In Scrums. Today -the All Blacks had a slighfc a.dvantage in the liheouts, but were beaten two to one in the scrums despite this disadvantage in possession they threw the ball about freely. Delamore's pace off the mark, Elvidge's solidity at second ftveeighths .and Goddard's liveliness at centre saw the wingers get more chances than they have had for some time. Meates gave further evidence of his improved form and scored one good try, while Botting made several attra^tive runs which were only halted by goo'd tackling and cover defence. There were two changes in the All Black pack, Skinner and Frazer replacing Simpson and Harvey,
who were slightly off colour. Crowley and Frazer were in good form in the lineouts. McHugh gave an impressive allround display and scored a grand. try, while Thornton and Christian were always to the fore in the iloose. I The University forwards proved 1 particularly lively opponents and the Northern Transvaal representative, Dinklemann, again im'pressed as a possi'ble Springbok of ; the -future. The backs showed !plenty of dash but lacked penetration, thought one rush oh the short side of the scrum early ' in the game might have yielded a try but for a forward pass. , . McHugh's Fine Tryr Jack Goddard opened the scoring after 20 minutes' play when hekicked a penalty goal. Just before half-time Delamore found touch with an excellent kick in the Universities' 25. Frazer took the ball from the throw in, broke through and when the ball came loose McHugh scooped it up like a back and raced over for & fine try which Jack Goddard was unable to cbnvert. Early in the second half Jack Goddard took , the ball behind Elvidge and was penaiised for usiiig Elvidge as a shield. Oberholzer kicked a penalty. Then Jack Goddard kicked his second penalty goal, making scores 9 — 3. Delamore raced up the sideline and put in a - high centre kick. Thornton was handy to catch the opposing full-back and the ball came back to Conrad, who slipped through a gap and sent Meates away for the best try of the match. Right on time M. Goddard intercepted a pass and ran 40 yards to score a spectacular try. His brother missed the conversion from well out.
