Received "Wednesday, 7 p.m. NEW YORK, August 17. The marine explorer, Dr. Otis Barton, today set a new world record for a deep sea dive by deseending 4500 feet in a steel benthoscope. The previons re.eord was 3208 feet set by Barton and William Beebe off Bermuda in 1934. ' . Dr. Barton 's deseent today was made off Santa Crnz Island, California. The lights in the benthoscope failed at 4100 feet but' the crew on the barge oontinued laying out cable so that Dr. Barton e'ould see what he could without lights. Fifty-seven minutes after he began the dive, the benthoscope had sunlc 4500 feet and Dr. Barton remained there 80 minutes before asking to be raised to the surface. He suffered greatly from eold during the deseent. He kept up a running commentary by telephone. "This is an unbelievable world down here," he fold the crew over the telephone. He said there were hordes of mysterious undersea j creatures swimming past the thick crvstal window of the hell. They included schools of fish of blinding brillianee.
