"Sprocket")

(By

An organised road cycling training run was 'held at the weekend when a promising field ,made the trip to Manakau and' back. Twelve competitors took par't and a close finish resulted in a narrow win for S. Snowdon, who arrived home first, hotly pursued by a bunch hea'ded by W. Walsh, who secured second place. Fastest time was secured by Don. Yeates, of Levin, and second fastest by Des. Smith, both of whom were off'scratch. Riders who competed and their handicaps are as follows: — D. Smith and D. Yeates (scr.), E. Walsh and P. Roach (2 mins.), R. Hornig, J. Dakin, E. Mathie and D. Hurley (3 mins'.), L. Wilton (4 mins.) , W. Walsh, S. Snowdon and R. Collis (5 mins.). Feature of the trial was the team work of the two scratch men, both of whom revealed that they are not far short of their best, and the promising showings of the winner and runner-up, who also teamed well. The presence of riders of the calibre of Yeates and Smith resulted in the pace being on practically all the way, with the front men and their comarkers giving of their best to make a decent showing.
