Trans-Pacific Trade Has Virtually Doubled
Received Tuesday, 7 p.m% NEW YORK, August 16. Trade between the United States and Australia and the South Pacific, had virtuaily doubled since prewar, the Ameriean Merchant Marine Institute has reported. The improved steamship service offered by Ameriean companies was the main reason for the increase. Most recent figures showed that Aus--tralia and the >South Pacific area were, now spending 16,800,000 doliars in the Enited States coinpared with 6,500.000 doliars in 1939. Because of refrigerated space in Ameriean ships, new trade had been developed by the importation of apples and pears which reached the Ameriean market in the off soason. Crayfish tails were another ^new import. •
