After being in the lead for most of the two and a half miles and one hundred and sixty yards journey, the Aucklander, Hunting Mac, hung on just long enough to win the Grand National Hurdles" by a head from another North Island horse, Our Gold, and the numbers were not posted until after the judge had considered a photo- , graph of the finish.
