Dangerous Driving Charge

Charged with dangerous driving, Robert Steven Searle, of Wellington, was convicted and fined £5 by Mr. A. A. McLachlan, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Otaki, on Friday. Failing to stop after an accident cost him £2. Costs in each case were 10s. Inspector R. B. Doggett prosecuted. Frederick J. Snowdon told the court that he was driving a truck from Wellington to Otaki on May 6. Shortly after leaving Paraparaumu, a tanker driven by defendant collided with his truck, and had not stopped. Witness was proceeding in second gear at the time. Only slight damage had resulted. Defendant, in a letter, stated that he did not feel or hear any impact, and did not know there I had been any collision until he stopped at Paekakariki, where he saw a dent in the tanker. Alfred John Miles, of Paraparaumu was charged with having no driver's licence when stopped by Inspector c. L. Davis at Otaki on June 3. There was no appearance of defendant, who was fined £1, with 12s costs. William Tibbs of Taita charged with having no warrant -of fitness and nod river's licence was fined £1, with 10s costs, on each charge. C. Wilton, L. Wilton and G Julius for riding their cycles in a careless manner, paid a penalty

of 10s, with 12s costs. ' Inspector Doggett stated that the chain had come off one cycle and the other two riders had given the third "a hand aiong." F. L. G. Howard, of Taihape, pleaded guilty by lerter to a charge of driving at an excessive speed through a re'stricted area, admitting that his speed was up to 35 m.p.h. Evidence submitted was that the speed was 40 m.p.h. through Otaki Railway, but that defendant was checked at 45 to 50 m.p.h. after passing the last shop at Otaki RaLway. The penaby was £3, with 10s costs. Bernard Gough, of Moera, was charged by Inspector C. L. Davis with having no number plates and no certificate of fitness. There was no appearance of defendant, who was fined £1, with 10s costs, on each charge. John Albert Hunt, of Paraparaumu, was charged with having no reftector and no light on his bicycle. The fine was 10s on each charge, with costs 22s.
