In the finai 55 minutes of the second day New Zealand lost three for 40. Dodds, Vigar and Eve were the mainstays of the Essex batting and they scored freely and- quickly; after ten, with' the leading batsmen out, Cave and Cresswell got among the tail-enders and six fell for 42. It was an eventful day's cricket marred for the crowd by the wind, which influenced them to produce overcoats. The pitch grew increasingly lively during the afternoon, suiting seamerS.
