Council Approves Memorial Plan By Majority
The1 plan of the propose'd Otaki war memorial and sports centre, made availahle toy a sub-committee appointed previous^y, came before the Otaki Borough Council' at its monthly meeting last night. A molion that the plan be adopted by the council and sent forward to the War Memorial Committee was carried by four votes to three. Prior to the motion, the Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmore, asked if some estimate of the cost of the proposed scheme and the maintenance costs, and of how the upkeep was to be furnished, could be made available before asking the council to vote on the matter. He felt the council should have this information an-d visualised a rise in rates to meet the upkeep. Cr. G. McKiniey said his opimon was that only a portion of the complete plan would be attempted at first, with the remainder tackied at a later date. -An estimate of the eosc oi tne portion of the ground to be o^enared first wes all thao was: neeessary at thfs stage. Cr. J. Li. Reuer agreeu, adding that there was ample money available to procure the land and provide a suitable hall for socials, dances a-nd similar functions. He quoted door takings at recent f functions held in the district and • said that the hall would be tne "money-spinner in this scheme," and would provide the maintenance The War Memorial Committee is now required to prepare the detail matter required oy the Internal Affairs Department when application for a subsidy is made.
