John Haig Is Hanged For Acid Bath Murder
Received Thursday, 9 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 10. John George Haigh, the acidbath murderer, was hanged at Wands.worth prison at 8 a.m. (G.M.T.) today. A notice pinned on the prison gates 10 minutes later announced that the sentence on Haigh had been carried out. The crowd outside the. prison grew to 500 and waited in briUiant sunshine for Haigh's death. A six-year-old girl, two six-year-old boys, and six school-girls were among the crowd. The crowd surged forward as a second notice was pinned up stating that a surgeon had examined Haigh's ib'ody and had eertified death, Haigh. was buried in the prison graveyard during the dinner hour after a servlce hy a chaplain. 6
and smoked his last 10 cigarettes — the daily ration of a ffian awaiting execution, says the London Star. He began to write his .last letters. Special facilities were granted him to write as many letters as he wished'and, unlike other prisoners at Wandsworth, he received all letters sent him. Since he was sentenced, Haigh had heen on a hospital diet, with additions prescri'bed by the prison doctor. His meals yesterday sent from the main prison kitchen, were the same as those eaten by men in the prison hospital. He was allowed to smoke at exercise as well as in his cell. He was permitted one pint of beer. Relatives and friends, authorised to see him hy a visiting committee of prison commissioners, paid their last visits yesterday.
