Received Tuesday, 10.45 a.m. SYDNEY, August 9. When two gunmen threatened a young couple in a park near the Central Railway Station late last liight, the young man snatched a revolver froni one of his assailants and shqt him dead. The police stated early today that the dead man had a very lon^ criminal record and at the time of his death was on bail on a charge of causing grievous bodily harm. William McAndrew, aged 28, and Violet Powell, aged 18, were sitting on a park seat under the floodlights about 400 yards from the station when the two men walked towards them. According to McAndrew's story, he rose from the seat and the man pushed a revolver into his stomach, threatening to shoot if he moved. They then searched him and took his cigarettes and a few shillings. One man then said, "Now we have robbed you we are going to take your sheila." While he held McAndrew covered, his companion began to lead the girl away at gunpoint. McAndrew then snatched the first man's gun and "let him have it." The man feli and McAndrew openecl fire on the other gunman, who rau away. McAndrew believes that he may have been wounded. The screams of Miss Powelf soon brought a crowTd to the scene. The police identified the dead man as Lisle Ernest George Knight, aged 31, who had "been indicted for almost every crime in the calendar." "Deserves Msdal" A high police officer added: "As far as I am concerned, no charge will be preferred against McAndrew. He deserves a medal for he has rid the community of a low type Who had lived on crime for years."
