Received Tuesday, 9.40 a.m. QUITO, August 8. Destruction in the earthquake which rocked Ecuador might total 50,000,000 dollars, said Dr. Miguel Albornoz, secretary to President Galo Plaza. He reduced estimates of the dead to below 4000. Many believed dead have been found among about 227,000 who fled to the hills and plains in terror al'ter the tremors wrecked the villages. "It is impossible to tell the exact total killed until we begin large-scale digging in the ruins of the towns, and this is made difficult because we lack bulldozers and other machinery. The task is too monumental to be tackled with picks and shovels," said Dr. Albonoz. In Guayaquil, however, officials said that the death roll had reaehed 9240.
