SOLDIERS WILL WORK EIGHT UNDERGROUND MINES
Received Fridav S.55 p.m. SYDNEY, August 5. Eight underground miiips have been selgcted to be worked by froops according to an anjioimeement by the Minister of Fuel (Senator Ashley). About 1830 armv personnel will work the mines in two shifts daily, prodncing about 7800 tons per dav. The minps selected uomprise tAvo in the west, four in the north and two in the south-west. Senator Ashley said that the JointCoal Board has reported that 16 mechanised mines were available but that the selection had been confined to eompletelv mechanised collieries which offered the most favoured conditions to inexperienced operators. Worked on a two-shirt basis they would require less | supervising and technical staff and would produce less coal than 16 collieries worked on a one-shift basis.
