The Daily Mail today featiures an artiple by Don Iddon (the ex-Australian) from Washington stating that oonfidential reports to Presideut Trqman apd Secreta^y of 3tate pean Achesqn on the British recovery effort and Britain's military establishment have npw become extremely critical. The Treasury gecretary (Mr. John Snyder) and the Marshall Aid Administrator (Mr. Paul Hoffman) are named among the authors of the "get tough with the British" reports. Mr. Iddon writes: "American officials in London and on the Continent are sending 'detailed memoranda listing slarkness, careless organisation, apathy of workers, and poor morale in the armed services. "Hostility to the Labour Grovernment is growing in Washington. Mr. Snyder told a British Cabinet Minister that the fall of the British Labour Grovernment would not perturb the American Congress but would be welcomed in sqme quarters." Mr. Iddon went on to quqte flat statements made in many reports that the Englishman was not working anytLing like as hard as his Ameriean counterpart. Works managers are said to be stubbornly oppqsed to modern methods of production and are reluctant to adopt American machinery organisation. American officials have also been influenced by European complaints that Britain is reeeiving the lion's share of Marshall Aid but making the poorest use of it. '•An American admiral told several politicians and newspapermen that there was poor mopale in the Royal Navy's lower deck and naval officers lack confidence in the Labour Government. The Royal Air Force organisation and fighting trim have also been condemned. ' '
