How Otaki Derived Its Name
Speaking at the welcome to the Aberdonian Scholarship winner at the Council Chambers yesterday, the Rev. P. Temuera informed the guest of how- Otaki was originally named. . .. y ■. • The whole of the area in the vicinity 'was dominated by Te Rauparaha, said the speake.r, and as it was in the lee of Kapiti, the stronghold of'the redoubtable warrior, the area was also known as Kapiti. When Te Rauparaha was in occupation, followdng 'his having secured possession, he sent a message to his people to follow him. "Haeremai, OTAKI," was the message, meaning: "You come. I will lead the way." ..
Otaki, therefore, meant, l . will lead," continue'd the speaker. It was fitting indeed that a vessel with the name Otaki had so gallant a record and, with so gallant a commander as the late Captain Bissett-Smith, should never have hesitated but led the attack immediately. Although out-gunndd she had infiicted much damage on her opponent, the German raider, Moewe, ere she was sunk.
