24-Year-Old Deaf Boxer's Success
MELBOURNE, July 31. Queensland welterweight 24-year-old Jack Toomey who knoclced out Ted Prior in Sydney last week, is stone deaf and knows that a round has started or ended only by watching his opponent! He has been deaf for 19 years as a result of diphtherix. Toomey told the Press that he knew a few opponents who took advantage of his deafness. They tried to fool him by dropping their fists suddenly. Bnt Jack has a counter for this. "I cau't liear the boos which follow such action, but I can feel the vibrations from the crowd, and I'm seldom wrong, " he said. In 25 fights, Toomey has wou 21- and aeored 14 knock-outs.
