Trampers Cross Tararuas To Attend Dance

Recently seven members of the Levin - Waiopehu Tramping Club left by transport for the Otaki Forks. A two-mile wa'k then preceded the climbing of Mt. Misery. The weather was favourable, enabring the party to reach Feild Hut under drv conditions. Fohowing refrsshments no time was lost in retiring in order to be fresh for the big day ahead. An early start was made in the morning by torchlight. On reaching Kime Hjitt (600 it. helow Mt. Hector) a keen wind was encountered. Little snow was seen until Mt. Hector was reached and it was found that the eastern slopes of the Beehives were quite thick. Visibirity hemg poor, all were glad to reach Alfa Hut, where a hot drink was enjoyed near a warm fire. On reaching the Tauherenikau, several tents were seen pitched around the hut, accommodation apparently being scarce. All were prepa.ring for the barn dance to be "held in the evening from ^riflah funds were collected for the Tararua ski hu,f beina buflt on M+, Rrepehu. The evening was well spent dancing and singing around camp fires. At day-hreak most of the Levin pa.rty were cooking breakfast. After fareweP-ing friends, they began the final stage of the journey and soon were over The Puffer and down in Kaitoke. From there they had a road wa'k to the Brown Owl Tearooms, and finally boarded the train for home. •
