Tlie Amethyst arrived at Hong Kong this morning, greeted by salvoefc of thousands of CMnese crackers and the sirens of merchaiitmen and launehes in the harbour. .Large crowds of foreigh and Chinese speetators lined the waterfront despite the rain, as Ihe vessel glided down the harbour. The citizens of Hong Kong " | Jiave arranged an elaborate programme for the entertainment of ihe ship's complement. Dauntless and determined as ever, last.night the Amethyst deelined assistance from the eruiser Jamaica wlien a boiler broke down about 8 p.m. and the ship stopped, says the N.Z.P.A.-Reuter eorrespondent, William Parrot, aboard the Jamaica. The eruiser offered to send over an engineer officer and ratings but the ! Amethyst got under way again an hour later at a reduced speed of uine knots. This was the second minor breakdown in the Amethyst since the Jamaica joined company with her. The Amethyst also signalled the Jamaica that she was making water aft and that with' the reduced erew it was difficult to deal with the trouble. The escort ship Cossack liad been ordered to stand by with towing gear but the Amethyst carried on.
