SABOTAGE SUSPECTED IN OPEN CUT MINES
CANBERRA, August 3. The Government susi/dcts that sabotage may be responsible for breakdowhs in the machinery being used in the open eut riiining in the Lithgow district. Comnionwealth investigation ofiicers and State police are makihg an immediate inqniry and seeurity fneasures have been tightened. After Army offifeers repoited certain ' matters to the Gcfverfiment, Mr Chifiey and the Attorney-General, Dr. Evsitt, eonferred and an inquiry was ordered. It is state d offieially that the ctamage is not sufficient to eause serious delhv and that the faulty parts are being replaced as quickly as possible. Wirfes were eut at oue mine and bulldozers, graders and earthmoving eqnipment ,-were found with defects. Meanwhile, the troops are exeeeding expectations with the amount of coal delivered to the railhdadS. The first train loads of coal from Muswellbrook reached Sydnev today and were ruslied to the g'as plants.
