Guard Pinned Beneath Derailed Wagon
NAPIER, Aug. 1. •When a collision with a heavily loaded timber truck caused the derailment of five empty shingle wagons of a goods train at the Ellison Street levei crossing, this afternoon, Guard Harold Oliver, aged 48, married, was pinned under one of the derailed wagons, remaining there an hour and a hatf before being released. Guard Oliver was pinned by the left leg in such a positiou that rescuers were afraid to remove tiurailway truck for fear of it collapsing on the victini but the use of jacks and a crane took the strain of the truck 's weight while rescuers dug underneath Guard Oliver and eased a stretcher beneath him. After releasing his pimoned ieg they removed him from his precari-j ous position. He received medical aid iinmediately and was rushed to hospital in an ambulance which had been standing by for v/ell over an hour. He is believed to be suffering injuries to the head, hip and leg.
