HIGH NAVAL HONOUR GIVEN AMETHYST
'N.Z.P.A.
— Reuter _
Covvriaht)
Received Tuesday, 10.50 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 1. One of.the British Fleet's highest honours will be accorded "the Amethyst when she enters Hong Kong harbour. She will be allowed to sail in ahead of the Jamaica on which Viee-Admirabl Madden is sailing. The Amethyst will eomplete the voyage to Hong Kong wtihout crew replacements or additions in accordance with the wishes of the ship's company. | It is now known that the men of the Amethyst took what they thought was a 100 to one chance of escaping when they made their dash for safeiy down the Yangtze, but everyone wanted to take that chance and t'hey were ready and willing when they were told only two hours befcrehand that the dash was to be made. Members of the crew tonight were overjoyed by their success. j* Despite their long period as virtual prisoners of the Communis's, the men looked well. They admitted that their food suppiy was getting short towards the end, that conditions under the blazing sun were becoming uncomfortab'e without th6 fans and that their quarters were cramped through the damage caused by the original Communist shelling.
