What Is "Drunk"? Puzzled why he had been charged with drunkenness, a negro seaman who appeared in the Police Court asked a constable: "What do you people call drunk?" "You had to be assisted to your feet, you were unsteady and you smelt strongly of liquor," was the reply. The man, who claimed he was more tired than drunk, was found asleep in the foyer of the Chief Post Office, Auckland, at 6.45 on Saturday/ morning. Defendant said his ship was in the stream and as he missed the last launch he had. to walk the streets all night, finally. sitting down on the Post Office steps and falling asleep. The presiding justices convicted the defendant without the customary flne.
