COMMUNIST REPLY TO "KIWI" DECISION
WELLINGTON, July 29. ' Press messages state that the Second N.Z.E.F. Association has changed its mind on the question of conscription, says a statement by Mr. S. Scott, general secretary of the New Zealand Communist Party. Mr. ICenneth Melvin, retiring president of the association, is reported to have said: "The Communists are opposed to national defence against Soviet Russia; we recognise Roviet Russia as the only Power whose persistent intransigeance threatens our way of life. " Mr. Scott 's statement continues: "Mr. Melvin is in erj;or. The position is not that New Zealand Communists are opposed to 'national defence against Soviet Russia,' but that there is not the remotest possibility of Soviet Russia attacking this country. We are, howei'er, opposed to New Zealand becoming involved iit a war of aggression against the Soviet Union which would be contrary to the interests- of New Zehland as well .as pf the Soviet Union, and which would beneiit only certain financial cliques in Ihe United States."
