Compromise Reached: Union Strives For Long-term Agreement

WELLINGTON, July 29. S The settlement proposals in the Wellington watersiders'M strike, described last mght by the Minister of Labour, Mr.q McLagan, as a "commonsense method of settling the dispute," have been considered today by the executive of the Welhngton Waterside Workers' union. "We have reached av cortipromise with the Minister," said the secretary of the union, Mr. E. A, Napier, today, adding that it was on a basis which had. been acceptable 'to the shipping companies. " "The only thing is that we want the agreement to be a long-term one, not merely interim," added Mr. Napier. "We would go'back to work tomorrow if it was."
The agreement necessary in- ( volves the appointment of an arbitrator who could give a decision on the immediate disputes no,w that the Waterfront Industry Commission has been suspended. The union. Yesterdays rain meant that ing again following- which the mmister's proposals will be put before a special meeting of the full unitn. Yestrday's rain meant that the strike made no difference to the cargo handling, although for the men it meant no attendance money payment.
