AUCKLAND, July 22. "You are what we call very/small fry," but appar'ently mastei^ bo'okmakers now employ men who are hardup like you to take bets for them, ' ' This comiuent was . made by Mr.. J. II. Lyxford, S.M., in the .Police / Court today to Albert Ernest Pugh, .aged 44, who pleaded guilty to bookmaking at Silverdale and selling tick-ets ih * a for prizes. The police said that Pugh took bers a hotel for an undiselosed principal. He said he was employed as a boilermalcer at the naval base for a weekly wage of £6. This was the first timo he had been in trouble. Defending counsel said that Pugh owed £70 for income tax and had a wife and two children. ' The Magistrate imposed a fine of £75, on the first charge and ordered immediate payment in default six weeks' imprisonment. On the second charge he fined Pugh £10. "If the master' bookmaker has any degree of decency, ' ' Mr. Luxford ^addecf/. f will pay the bigger fine for you.",,4/>yii
