Gaol Sentence for Bookmaker
AUCKLAND, July 20. Sentencing Henry Clifton Sallery to the maximum term of three mohths' imprisonment for keeping ai^d uping Shortand Street premises aB a common gaming-house, Mr. H. Jenner Wily, S.M., in the Police Court'" today, described him as a persistent ofEender who had continued for many years to flout the law. Sallery pleaded guilty. The police said that when they visited the premises on the. afternoon of July 9 they took in two hours bets totalling £61 over the telephone. Sallery was arrested. Defending counsel said Sallery was in his 60th year. The case eould have been defended, but that would have meant bringing outside people to give evidence. There was only one telephone on the premises. Sallery • had wanted to brealc his connection'with betting, but people continued to riug him up«with bets. He" merely accepted bets for someone else. The Magistrate said that a ftbe iu this case would not be appropriate. "Two terms of imprisonment have not stopped him," Mr. Wily said, "and I see no reason why the maximum penalty should not be inflicted"' . - Counsel liled notice of appeal and Sallery was veleased pending the'jhearing of the appeal. ,
