The trial of Lachian Thompson McLean, a 70-year-old farmer, of Waituna West, on one count of negligent driving causing death commenced before Mr. Jus'tice Greson and a jury in the Supreme Court in Palmerston North yesterday. The chargo against McLean arises from an accident at Rewa on March 27, wheil accused's wife, who was a passenger in his car, was killed. The Crown Prosecut'or was Mr. G. I. McGregor, and counsel for accused was Mr. A. M. Ong ey.

Tractor Plunges Over Bank. A Manunui farmer, Mr. R. E. Boddy, and his two young children narrowly escaped When a tractor plunged over a 25-foot bank into a swamp, smashing the trailer it was towing. Mr. Boddy was feeding out hay from the trailer and the children, a boy aged six and a girl aged three, wqre sit'ting on the tractor when it began moving towards the bank 25 feet away. Mr. Boddy tried to apply the brakes, 'out the tractor went oVer the bank, rolle-d three times and ended on its side. The children suffered injuries to their faces, hands and legs and the bov is now in Taumarunui Hospital. Mr. Boddy had a leg injured. It is believed that' one of the children accidentaliy released the brake.
