WELLINGTON, July 18. A baii 011 overtime. w.ork was instituted by the Wellington brancli of the New Zeaiand Waterside Workers' Union today. A sirnilai' move at Lyttelton, Fort Chaimers, Dunedin and Bluff, has been directed by the nationa) couneil of the union. Wellington watersiders held a stopwork meeting at 1 p.m. to consider the national council 's decision. The meeting ended jusi before 4 o'elock after which the men put the hatch covers on the ships being worked and went home for the day. v The waiking delegate, Mr. J. E. Napier, stated after the meeting that work would be restricted to a 44-hour week instead of the usual spread of 59 hours. The hours worked would be ffrom 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on week days and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Normal night work from 6 o'clock to 9 o'clock would not be performed for the duration of the ban. This decision, made on a direction from the national council, had been adopted by an overwbelming majority and it would apply until such time' as the union 's present demands were met.
