ANTI-CONSCRIPTIONISTS GET CALM HEARING
WELLINGTON, July 18. An attentive reeeption was given an ti-eonscriptiou speakers in the Welling tdn Town Hall to-night by about 150. persons. There were a few regular in terjectors and the meeting carried by an easy mtjority a resolution in opposi tion to eonscription: The speakers were Mr F. Langstor.e. M.P. for Roskill, and Mr IJ. Winston Khodes, an associate professor at Can terbury l' niVersify "College. Police stationed in the hall liad'a lei surely evening but occasionally caution ed people who were attempting to per sist with their inter jeetions from tlie back of the hall. Ilalf a dozen voices at oue stage began to count out Mr Langstone but they quietened down when approaehed by the police. A11 appeal for funds to fight eonscription by way of advertisements, was niade by Mr Rliodes. Ile asked first for £5 notes and got 21 contributions in £5 notes and promissorv notes. Mr P. C. P. McGavin, cliairman, announced that the total collection was £226. Apart from opposing tlie principle of eonscription, the speakers critieised the proposals to train the IS year olds and referred to the need for sea and air power.
