Applications For State Houses.
During the quarter' ended on June 30, 810 new applications for State houses were loaged with the State Housing Department in the Manawatu, Wellington, Wairarapa and Wanganui disuricts, 515 being from civi.ian app.icants and '295 from fcx-servicemen. The total number of unsatisfied appficatiqnson hand at the elose of the quarter was 12,214, of which 8631 were from civilians and 3583 from ex-service-men. _ : Recruiting Detectives. Scotland Yard was often asked why it did not recruiG "readymade" detectives, said Mr. H. W. Howgrave-Graham to the Christchurch Businessmen's Club. Large, because of detective fiction, some" people could not understand -why Scotland Yard did not employ the ■brilliant amat'eur who made lightning deduction sfrom quite fantasitic situations and made the professional look a half-wit.
