"Weeping Virgin" A Tragic Hoax

Reeeived Friday, 8.50' p.m. WARSAW, July 15. The Roman Catholic Hierarchy appealed today to Poles to stop making pilgrimages to Lublin where oue was killed and 19 injured in a stampede to see a "weeping" portrait of the Virgin. The Bishop of Luhlin said an inquiry "by a speeial commission had failed to disclose any basis for widespread reports that ' ' anything oi a supernatural character" had occurred in the cathedral. A Government spokesman said the responsnhility for the "blood of the people killed or half killed in Luhlm falls equally upon the Catholic church and the Voice of America (radio)." The State Prosecutor has ordered an investigation of the disturbances. It is reported that two _ transport officials who organised * speeial train excursions to Luhlin have been arrested. Peasants from the farming area around Luhlin have joined the streams of pilgrims d'islocating bus and train services and bringing confusion to the whole city. Extra militia have "been gssigned to Luhlin to halt the fiow of worshippers to the cathedral.
