County Council Frames Its Year's Estimates

The general rate cf 1.41/64d in tne £ on a valuation of £4,581,676 is estimated to prpCuuce £28,500. For the financiai j-ejar 1948-49, the expenditure was i50,162 as against an esnmate oi £40,939. - - Road maintenance estimates fpr the new year are as fohows: — Tokomaru Riding: £4725. Thc, cutstanding features are £1500 for the Makerua-Rangitane Road, £485 ior the Okuku Road, £385 for tht Yokomaru-Poplar Road and £360: ior; the Tokomaru Township roads. Wirokiiio Riding : £6605, This includes provision of £1150 for the ohau West Roa'd, £625 for KiniberIsy Road, £550 for Gladstone Road and £415 for Kawiu Road. ocaKi Riding: £2145; £395 is set fside for Rahui Road and £250 for Waitohu VaLey Road. Te Horo Riding: £3025. A sum of £1100 is set aside for Te Horo Beach Road, £275 for Waimeha Township loads, £185 for Waikanae township roads and £140 for Mangaone (Te _l_.ro) Koau. On the revenue siae the main items of the £21,285 are estimated rs foliows: — Stock transfers after eharge to plant or jobs, £4750; Ireavy traffic fees, £2750; Govern_nenu sucsidy on rates, £2500; benffine, oil and grease after charge tp plant, £2400; and miscellaneous, including transfers, £1878; work fpr Orown and local bodies, £500; motnr drivers' Jicences, £450. The main items of the expenditure of £49,785 are: — Interest on ioans, £7004; maintenance and conshuction on district roads, £16,500; ca.aries, grants and sundries, £6400. * % * A letter received 'at the meeting from Mr. G. W. Munford, of Shannon, regarding Pretoria Road was -eferrect to the councillor for the riding and the engineer. In his i.etter, Mr. Munford said the road could do with a good dressing of river metal. % sfc Mrs. A. Reid wrote complaining of what she described as the "Ueplorable" state of the Ohau -West Road, stating that R requ'irea metading. The chairman, Mr. A." M. C:uquhoim, said that this road had been seen during the annu'al inspection and it had then been agreed that metal be put there. ❖ * i V , . * ' . Mr. F. E. Janson, wrote pointing out that there '.was an accumulatipn of growth, at the intake of - a water race at hls property at Waitarere Road. It was decided that this be attende'd to. * * * A complaint by Mr. A. O. Poad, of Weraroa, regarding the accesg to his property was referred to. the councillor for the riding, with power to aet: * * * Mr. B. W. Boddy and three others drew attenticn to the state of McDonald Road, stating that there were many potholes requiring attention. This was referred to the engineer for a report. * * * * The Horowhenua Boys' and Girls' Agricultural • C.ub forwarded its annual repoyt and asked for the nomination of a delegate from the council to its future activities. Cr. D. K. Guy was appointed. * * * The health inspector, Mr. w. J. Guinan, submitted his report for ■the quarter, stating that there had been six cases of diphtheria in the district and two cases of scarlet fever. The usual inspections had been made of eating houses and new sanitary fittings. An inspection had also been made of the Koputaroa and Tokomaru railway stations following reports of dirty conditions in the cattle pens. This matter had been taken up with the Railwa-ys Department. Complaints regarding a piggery at Levin had also been attended lo.
