r ' rr— j .• i The monthly meeting df fihe Otaki Borough Council was held, on Wednesday night. The Mayor, Mr.; C. F. Atmore, presided dver Messrsr K. Ames, N. D. Anderson, E. J. Cook, H. W. Hakaraia, G. McKinley ahd J. Retter. The town clerk, Mr. -Alex. Wilson, was also present. > * The works committee tabled a comprehensive survey of works 'recommended during the year, grading and reforming, together with priming and tar-sealing of many roads writhin the borough, all detai'ed in order of priority. " ' ' An offer from. the chairman of the works committee, Cr. - Retter, to donate 100 norfolk pines -for p anting near the beach pa vilion was accepted with thanks, and the works committee is to advise what steps it proposes to take to protect these trees when planted, The Victoria' College University wrote 'thanking the .council for its generous help towards its jubilee by way of a donation. A picture benefit, was offered by Kerridge-Odeon, Ltd;, for July 28. Permission was granted for this game.* • ' .. ; The'Manawatu Catchment Board forwarded a copy of a resolution authorising an administrative rate to be levied, the' rate this year to be l/12d. in the £ on the capital value. An app'ication from .Potter and McChesney, taxi . proprietors, for permission to erect a phone bpx on the taxi stand near the Civic Theatre was referred back to the applicants, pointing out that the theatre taix stand was a. night stand only, an-d that the permanent taxi stand for the town area was outside the council offlce. A recommendation from the Traffic Inspector is also to be discussed with the applicants. The Mayor made brief reference to the meeting held recently by the Hon. Mr. Semple, stating that it was most successful and adding that the picture, "Here is New Zealand," was a' singularly good one, depicting many towns and beauty spots of New Zealand. Two applications for positions on the council's outside staff were received. It was mentioned that two earlier applications had also been before the council. It was agreed to advise applicants that at present there were no immediate requirements for additional staff, and that the positions would be advertised when vacaneies occurred. Cr. Cook was recommende'd to represent the council on a committee it is proposed to. set up to assist in allocating State houses. . Subdivisions in Matene Street, Moutere Block and Dunstan Street were unanimously 'approved; and a 6ug:gesaon that a proposed subdivision of a block in Waerenga Road be referred . back with a request that the right-of-way outlined be on the opposite side, on adjoining land, was defeated by four votes to three. Discussion reVeale'd that the right-of-way proposed was for use as a private road only. Cr. Cook expressed xegfet that as there was a difference of opinion in respect of the application, the town planner wasLhot to be consulted. The name of Hariata Street' was approved for the new street 'being formed on the Moutere block, opposite. the Commercial Gardeners' rooms. One further tenderjfor a section at Tasman Beach was~" accepted.
