BASKETBALL NOTES

Heartening Standard Set By Two Teams (By "Forward") Referees reported two games which were ourstanding on Saturday because they were remarkably free from infringements — Tui A v. College C and C.O.G.A. v. College B. It is seldom that a game proceeds without infringements and these four teams are to be congratulated upon their knowledge and interpretation of the ru es. Tui A v. College. The Tui A v. College C game was fast and skilfully played by both sides, the centres particularly showing great alertness as the ba 1 changed direction rapidly from time to time. ' The better the defence play became the greater became the aemand upon the skill of the centres. In this third, bo.h sides demonstrated both sides of the game, gjodl attacking and good defending. As1 the ball passefi, from College de-l fence to College centre Tuis were] at once on the attack in.ercepting j we'l to take the ball from College who made up for their lack of i height by rapid, clean passing. I They were quick on their feet and| showed themselves no mean exponents of the art of dodging. It would be difficult to select anyone of these centres as the outstanding player. J. Dumbell cleared the ball from the defence, while P.l Sciascia and D. Winterburn skfi-j fully avoided their opponents toi send it down to the forward third. A pleasing fealure of the College C forward work was their improvement in goal throwing and although K. King scored ten of the fifteen goals, E. Hewitt and P. Wickens did good fie.d work. P. Wic-; kens shoots we 1 but should practice getting away from her opponent. She tends to gst behind her; girl instead of doging sideways and j forwards. a Of the Tui players, both M. Dome and J. Bird did some good goal throwing and although she does not shoot well and is really a B1 team p ayer. M. Malcolm show- 1 ed up well fielding for the others. L. R3binson guided] her centres well and played good positional basketball. She was; abiy supported by D. Williams who; intercepted many times to save her team. She does not make the mistake of re ying upon her height but is agile and quick thinking. Tui defence is rather slow and M. Honore is one of ihose tall girls who would do well to cultivate speed. She lacks the will to attack. The best defender of the two teams was U. jL"Ogden. C.O.G. v. College B. The College Oid Giris game was a splendid examp e of what can be done with clever defence work. J. Parr and J. Roberts gave the College B forwards few opporamities to score. They wasted no energy but by watching the direction of play intercepted the pass from the centre often before Co'lege had an opportunity to gei near the goal circle. A. Staples scored well for College Old Girs. B Grade. In the B grade, Textile A are maintaining their position, and like Punahau, put up a good score against their opponents. S. Naisbett does mos^ of the scoring for Textiles, but both E. Raika and N. Cook do good field work in the forward third. R. Wi'liams and H.

Davis oi this team both play good basketball. Punahau and Capstan both show good team play and although it is difficult to pick out any one player these teams deserve their success oecause of the ability to work together. Tui B had a runaway victory from College Old Gir's B chiefly because of the slow passing among the Old Girls forwards. This teani's centres and defence worked wel), but the slow pass in the forwaru third gave Tuis ample opportunity to intercept the bal).
