Last Saturday saw the Levin Golf Club commence the 9-C.L cup competition. Some of the first round games were not played so that in those cases the p'ayers who had byes are still uncertain as to Who they are to play. A sweepstake stableford was played in. conjunction and John Tomjinsoh won this, witlf Brian Eagar second, The winner had his handicap reduced ■from 18 to 16 as a resiijt. The highlight of "ihe weekend was the first visit of f$e Foxton club for- an inter^clnb mateh, This was a particular y good «how, as most of the players were Ipng handicappers and had ihe opportunity of match play under team cpnditions, a very valuable experiehee to. a golfer. The result was in Levin's favour with 13 singles to nfiie and six fourball games tq thxee, with two matches haived. Naturally the Foxton members want to turn the tables on their own ground and we will be looking for ward to. visiting their new course, particularly as one of their more enthusiastic members assu^es us that^even after the heaviest rain they play in carpet slippers over there. Tbp DogsFrank Veysey and Dick. Jones teamed up just too well for the holders, Hugh Walker and Frank Carrington and now hold the trophies. On one hole in particular, a bogey five, the challengers' best ball was in the cup for four and, receiving a stroke, gave a nett three. The def^nders bashfully admitted that they'are good at the game, but not good enough to can a 200-yard shot for an albatross to win against a nett eagle. Maybe they just need practice. The fixture for next Saturday will be' the second round of the foursomes and the first ro.und of the foursomes flight.
