Received Wednesday 7.50 p.m. SYDNEY, July 13. Continuing the hearing of the contempt charges against unions an'3. union leaders, arising from the failure to pay into the Arbitration Court, funds withdrawn from banks to aid the' coal strikers, Mr Justice Foster this aftemoon
sentenced John 'Hodge iiing, secretary of the Westekn District of the. Miners' Federation, to 12 jfnohths imprisonment. Iving is already serving a month for contempt. Other (Tases, inelhding those involving the Communist Farty and 23 of -its leading members, were adjourned until to-morrow. Mr John Parkinson, a trustee of the Westertf 'Distriet Federation, said that at the time he had signed the clieque for £4500, it was blank. He did not know what the fu-11 amouiit was,« or whei'C the money was. Mr Thomas Welsh and Mr William Thoinas Smith gave similar evidence. When the time allowed the Commun--ist Party and its officers td pay £1000 • into the Court had expired this after- 1 noon, the registraf, Mr J. E. Taylor, toid the Court that the money had notbeen forthcoming.
